What is an RCD? A Residual Current Device RCD is a safety device designed to protect people from electric shock. It works by constantly monitoring the flow of electricity in a circuit. If it detects a difference between the live and neutral currents, which can indicate electricity leaking to earth, it will automatically disconnect the power within milliseconds. RCDs are commonly used to protect socket circuits, outdoor equipment, and areas where there is a higher risk of electric shock. Modern installations often use RCBOs, which provide both overcurrent protection and residual current protection in a single device.
